About this time last year, my sweet mom met Jesus face-to-face! I wrote then how my brother, sisters, and I were so blessed to have such a wonderful mother!
As our family reminisced about Mom’s life, we described her with words like faith, strength, kindness, generosity, prayer, and unconditional love. We talked about her strong belief that the past is gone and tomorrow will be bright.
I wish you could have known my mother. Everyone loved her!
Why? Because she truly loved everyone and looked for the best in everything. Is it any wonder that one of her favorite sayings was “Things just have a way of working out”? I cannot begin to number the times I heard her say that.
“We are never ready to give them up, but they are in a better place,” said one of my Facebook friends. Surely poet Henry Van Dyke understood this truth as he penned the beautiful poem below.
Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van Dyke
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, “There, she is gone”
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me — not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, “There, she is gone,”
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”
And that is dying…
