My friend Carol told me about a fun activity that she did when her grandkids came for a visit. They worked together on a “fruit of the Spirit tree.” What is the fruit of the Spirit? Well, Galatians 5:22-23 describes it as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
If you are like me and need a little refresher on what the fruit of the spirit means in everyday life (and who doesn’t), Scott Williams wrote a wonderful article, “10 Ideas: Reflecting the Fruit of the Spirit.” It’s not only a great reminder that we all need regular checkups on our spiritual health, but also is filled with helpful suggestions.
For example, Scott says that joy is a product of fixing your focus on God’s purposes and not your circumstances. And then he asks a question, “Am I experiencing a joy of life on a regular basis, or is my happiness dependent on things going smoothly in my day?”
Now, as Carol was helping her grandkids understand the fruit of the Spirit, she and her husband had devotions with the kids about joy, love, peace … And they found a tangible way to reward them when they exhibited these traits. The kids received pieces of construction-paper fruit that they placed on a cardboard tree. On each piece of “fruit,” Carol jotted why she had given it to a particular child.
I think Carol’s “fruit tree” would be a fun, meaningful activity for parents and grandparents to do with their children and grandchildren. It’s such a great reminder about how all of us should live our lives. Thanks, Carol, for sharing this great idea!
How do you help your children or grandchildren understand what it means to live a life filled with the fruit of the Spirit?
