A fun thing that Pops and I have done with our grands is to take them on a donut date—right to the donut “factory” itself.
We used to live near a Krispy Kreme. We enjoyed watching the donuts being made there even more than eating them! Well … almost.
But really, what is better than a piping hot glazed donut? Of course, there are not just plain donuts available. At most donut shops there’s a counter display filled with donuts of different sizes and shapes—ones chocolate covered with sprinkles, strawberry-filled, cinnamon-apple …
Pops and I have snapped some great pictures of the grands eating donuts and captured some great memories. Perhaps one day, when we are no longer on this earth, our grands will be eating donuts with their kids and they’ll say, “I remember eating donuts with my grandparents.” And maybe they’ll even take out a tattered scrapbook and point to an old picture or two.
If your grandkids don’t live nearby, you might send them a gift card to a donut shop in their area. Ask the kids’ parents to e-mail or text you a picture of the grands eating donuts. You might respond with your own donut memories.
After all, the sugar on a donut isn’t just on top. Sometimes the sweetness of time with a grand at a donut shop reaches deep within a grandparent’s soul.
