Each year on Memorial Day, we stop to remember the men and women who died in service to the USA. This year Memorial Day will be on Monday, May 30.
Father Dennis Edward O’Brien captures the spirit of Memorial Day in his words below.
“It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the organizer, who gave us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag.
And whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.”
— Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, USMC
Who do you think of on Memorial Day? I remember my mom talking about her many friends who fought for our nation’s freedom in World War II who never came back.
May we pause today and thank God for the brave men and women who gave their all for you and me. And may we remind our children and grandchildren that freedom is not “free.”
