As if swooped up by gusts of wind, the years tumble one into the other. Too often we become so busy with our own lives, questions remain unasked until it is too late to seek the answers.
As my mother’s daughter, I have begun to wonder about the decisions she made in her life, and the path she chose to travel. Surely all young girls have their dreams of love, of a life far beyond what they can see, of mountains to climb or rivers to cross.
I never asked.
But I know for certain she had a gentle spirit yet possessed an inner strength that carried her through personal difficulties of life and the heart-breaking loss of a child. There was unconditional love for her children which influenced each of us within our own families.
I cannot know now, but I dare to hope that there were no regrets at the road taken.
I dare to believe, had I asked, she would have said, “I had my dreams, I made my choices, and both have made me happy.”
Editor’s Note: If your mother is living, have you asked her about the dreams she had as a young woman? If you have teenagers or young adult children, have you told them about your dreams for life?
