Anne Dierks, grandmother of fourteen grandchildren, has hosted what she calls Granny Camp for more than a decade. The Dierks’ grandchildren live in various states and fly in once a year for the special camp.
In her book Granny Camp! How to Bond with Your Grandchildren, Ann not only explains how to plan a special summer camp for the grands, but also includes menu ideas, possible activities, crafts, and much more. Granddad Dierks is involved in Granny Camp with Anne. He teaches the grandkids about the many things including the Golden Rule, goals, God, genealogy, and grades.
Madelyn Young, who blogs as Southern Story Lady, must think a lot like Anne. Bonding with her grandkids is a top priority for her. She and her husband have had Cousins’ Camp since 2001. She says Cousins’ Camp is loved by all, “the parents, who had some time for themselves—the girls, who had fun playing with each other—and Maddie and Granddaddy, who could slip back into our ‘parenting’ roles and have fun with the girls without the parents around.”
Have you ever had a Granny Camp or Cousins’ Camp? What tips do you have for someone like me who might want to begin this fun tradition?
