-by Mary May Larmoyeux– Many years ago, my friend Nancy Downing and I were brainstorming ideas for what became The Grandparent Connection: 365 Ways to Connect With Your Grandchild’s Heart. It was a lot of fun to bounce thoughts off of one another, and to come up with creative ways grandparents could connect heart to heart with their grandchildren.
Nancy had one of my favorite ideas: Listed on page 11 of the little book, it simply says: “Send your grandchild a subscription to a special magazine and order the same magazine for yourself. Then discuss the same stories and articles with your grandchild.”
Following Nancy’s suggestion, Pops and I began giving magazines for children to our grandkids, ones that promoted Christian values. And we ordered some of the magazine subscriptions for ourselves.
Some of Pops’ and my grandkids live nearby, but others live many states away. Now in the age of technology, it’s always a lot of fun when we Facetime out-of-state grandkids and point to a current issue of Clubhouse Junior or Creation Illustrated magazine and a granddaughter says with excitement, “We get that magazine, too!” Telling jokes they know from a shared magazine, and reading the articles together, is actually the next best thing to doing this in person.
Now there are a lot of wonderful magazines for children these days. But here are some of Pops’ and my personal favorites:
Clubhouse Junior: Clubhouse Junior has fun games, Bible stories, crafts and recipes and more. It’s for kids ages 3 to 7. www.clubhousejr.com
Clubhouse Magazine: This is an award-winning Christian magazine that has provided wonderful content for children for 25 years! It’s for ages 8-12. Learn more here: www.clubhousemagazine.com
Brio Magazine: I just ordered this magazine for our young teen granddaughters and am excited that Brio is back! Focus on the Family published this magazine from 1990 to 2009, and it is relaunching in May 2017! Focus on the Family is running an introductory special now. You can preorder by March 31, 2017, and get 10 issues for $10.
Creation Illustrated magazine: With its beautiful color pictures, some have said that Creation Illustrated is the Christian answer to National Geographic Magazine. It’s filled with wonderful stories, creation adventures, recipes and more. www.creationillustrated.com
World News Group offers three wonderful magazines for children: God’s Big WORLD, WORLDkids, and WORLDteen. They will not only grow your child’s love for learning, but also and encourage their faith.
- God’s Big WORLD (Pre-K – 1) – Helps preschoolers connect with God. https://godsbigworld.wng.org/
- WORLDkids (2nd – 5th grades) – Offers fun and engaging materials for 7-10 year olds—digitally and in print. https://kids.wng.org/about

What trusted magazines for children would you suggest, especially ones that could help them know how fun and fulfilling the Christian life can be?
